In response to the earthquake that affected Yogyakarta and its surrounding areas on May 27, 2006, Bengkel Amal Los Angeles collaborated with local Indonesian organizations Justin118Sound and ASIS USC to produce a fundraising performance that was held at University of Southern California’s Bovard Auditorium on June 24 2006. The event featured performances from Los Angeles based Indonesian music and dance groups such as Burat Wangi Balinese gamelan under the direction of I Nyoman Wenten and Nanik Wenten, as well as Kyai Dorodasih Javanese gamelan under the direction of Djoko Walujo. Other guest artists included Sri Dance Company, founded by Sri Susilowati; and Emiko Saraswati Susilo.

Cast Briefing and Prayer before the show
The fundraising event showcased Indonesia’s culture through music, dance, and a traditional fashion show (by Adjie Dinata), in honor of Yogyakarta, a prominent center of art and culture of Indonesia. With a cast and crew of 98 people and with only 2 weeks of planning, this event has proven the resilient, giving, and cooperative spirit of the Indonesian community in Los Angeles.
Bengkel Amal would like to thank the Los Angeles community, Justin118 Sound and ASIS USC for their tireless efforts to making this event possible, the Indonesian Consulate General in Los Angeles for their support, and the generous sponsorships from companies such as Beryl Ceramics and Warisan Inc, IndoCafe restaurant, and Simpang Asia restaurant, to name a few. The fundraising was attended by 250 audience members, and raised $4, 405.77. The proceeds have been allocated to humanitarian organizations in Indonesia, namely Bengkel Amal, Lions International Club, World Harvest, and Die Bruecke. These organizations are committed to respond to the urgent need of providing care to the survivors of the earthquake, in the form of medicine, food, clothing, and rehabilitation efforts.
