A major earthquake occurred around the Jogjakarta area on May 27th, 2006. The earthquake destroyed most existing buildings (about 80% of the buildings collapsed or were badly damaged), and killed more than 6,200 people. We felt devastated because this catastrophe occurred exactly in the area where many of the people we care about live. In a short time, we’ve managed to contact our friends and gathered as many funds and other forms of donations as we could get, and on Tuesday 5 AM (May 30th 2006), six people from Bengkel Amal drove a big van filled with all the donations directly to Kulon Progo and Bantul. Our aim is to distribute donations to the remote and hard-to-access areas. Many donations have been sent from everywhere around the world for the Jogjakarta earthquake relief. Unfortunately, donations have not been distributed equitably. There are some remote and hard to access areas which have not received any formal aid until this day. These areas are our distribution target. Time is of the essence here. Most of these people have no shelter, no food, nothing at all. Many of them are injured and sick also.
Most of our money donation in the first week is used to purchase food, medicine, blankets, tents, toiletries and sanitary supplies. Donations received after the first week will be used for medical team’s fuel expenses, medical supplies, meals for volunteers aswell as for rehabilitation purpose toward the quake victims.
